Flora

Flora

Mythology ~ ANCIENT ROME ~ (Greek: Chloris) Originating with the ancient Sabines, she was a minor deity, who was a goddess of blossoming flowers and the spring season. She was also a fertility goddess. Her cult was said to have been introduced by either the Sabine King Titus Tatius (a contemporary of Romulus) in the 8th century BC, or by Numa Pompilius (The second King of Rome, successor of Romulus) during the 7th century BC. Her festival, called Floralia or Florifertum, was celebrated April 27 - May 3 from 238 BC to the 4th century AD (and may be part of the origin for modern May Day celebrations). Her first temple was on the Quirinal Hill and the second, dedicated in 238 BC, was near the Circus Maximus. The Romans celebrated Flora's power over the renewal of the cycle of life by dancing, drinking, decorating everything with flowers, and wearing bright colors (instead of their usual white clothes). They also made offerings of milk and honey to her. However, the festival lost popularity and was discontinued for a time. Due to bad weather, it was restored in 173 BC, as the Ludi Florales, where theatrical and sport performances were added. She was married to Favonius (Greek: Zephyrus, the west wind). Fountain of Youth

Myth ~ ARABIA/ASIA and SPAIN/CARIBBEAN ~ In the different accounts, the Fountain of Youth appears as an elixir, fountain, river, or spring of rejuvenating power. Marco Polo heard the story in China. This version of the story centers on the First Emperor Qin Shi Huangdi. Knowing that he was soon to die, he went in search of the immortals who lived on the eastern coast. In another version, he sent the sorcerer Xu Fu and several thousand children to find the elixir of life. They failed and Xu Fu and the children founded Japan instead of returning. The original legend probably started in Arabia. The Arabic story of the Fountain of Youth appears in the "Alexander Romance," also known as al-Iskandar Dhu al-Qarnain ("Alexander the Two-Horned"). In this story, Alexander the Great goes to the Land of Darkness to find the Fountain of Youth (or the "Well of Life," in Arabic). This story was taken to Spain where a prose version is preserved in aljamiado (a form of Spanish written in the Arabic alphabet). The Europeans learned of the story with the publication of the epic Medieval French, Roman d'Alexandre, c. 1200-1300. The Fountain was also in a European story, the “anonymous and apocryphal” Letter of Prester John in 1165. Spanish explorer Juan Ponce de Leon was reportedly searching for the Fountain when he went to the Caribbean in 1513. However, the native population of Indians who worked in the Spanish mines and sugar plantations had died. The Fountain of Youth rumor was vital to gain royal approval to explore the mainland (and acquire slave labor). Many scholars claim that De Leon heard of the fountain from the Puerto Rican natives. However, the natives probably first heard of the fountain from the Spaniards and told them what they wanted to hear so they would leave. In the Caribbean, the location is said to be either on Florida or Bimini (One of the possible location of Atlantis). The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ The so-called Fountain of Youth is an inscription-covered cube-shaped Ancient Healing Device fond beneath a waterfall in Honduras by Daniel and Dr. Lee. The Goa’uld Telchak (who Daniel believes is the origin of the Mayan Rain-God, Chac) developed the sarcophagus from this Device. Anubis went to war with Telchak to control the Device. Telchak lost the war, however, he hid the Device on Earth from Anubis. This Device has the power to rejuvenate tissue, restore dead life, and even animate non-living tissue. However, it is extremely powerful and when used improperly and with humans in close proximity, it is capable of driving humans mad or even death. While Anubis was fully ascended, he gained knowledge to the Ancients’ technology. He built his own version of the Device, which he used to create the Kull Warriors (See Evil Dead) on Tartarus (711/712 – Evolution). After a month of study, Carter and Jacob/Selmak have modified the device. They merged it with a T.E.R. (Transphase Eradication Rod; Goa’uld weapon that can of make visible and destroy anything out of phase from normal perception). However the weapon is only 70% effective usually requires two shots to kill a Kull warrior (716 – Death Knell).

Holographic Freyr Asgard Freyr

Freyr

Myth ~ ANCIENT NORSE ~ (Also called: Frey, Yngvi, and Fricco [in southern Sweden] "God of the World," and "Lord of the Aesir.") (Translation: "Lord") He was originally a God of Fertility from the Vanir (the group of nature deities and enemies of the Aesir); although he later lived with the Aesir after the two groups became allies. He later became the God of Rain and Sun and was also the Patron God of Abundant Harvests. He was a heroic warrior, yet a God of Peace. Furthermore, he was in charge of the elves. He was also beckoned to grant a fertile marriage. He was married to Gerd, a beautiful giantess who was a Goddess of the Earth, and is the brother of Freya. His father is Njord (the God of Fire, Sea, and Wind). His ship is called the Skidbladnir (translation: "Wooden-Bladed") and it can become so small that it can be carried in his pocket. The dwarves Brokk and Eitri made his chariot which Gullinbursti, the golden boar, pulls. On Ragnarok, he will battle without weapons, because he gave his sword to Skirnir in payment for Gerd’s hand in marriage. Freyr will be the first to be killed by Surt, the Fire Giant. Freyr was worshiped in Sweden, Norway, and Iceland. He was at one time said to have reigned as the king of the Swedes and is said to be the ancestor of the Ynglingar, Sweden’s royal family. His cult center was Uppsala, Sweden (40 miles north-northwest of Stockholm).
The Show (Stargåte SG-1) ~ Freyr is the Asgard who protects the planet of K’tau and a member of the Asgard High Council. The people who live on K’tau think SG-1 are elves who were sent by the Gods because they mentioned Thor and Malchus thinks they are “evil elves” since after they arrived, the Eye of Odin dimmed. The people of K’tau also use runes in their alphabet. Daniel says that Freyr is the God of the Southern Rain and is the one who sends elves (505 – Red Sky). He brings the news of Thor’s fate to the SGC and requests that SG-1 go on a rescue mission to save Heimdall and his research. He, along with two other Asgard ships, later rescues Heimdall and SG-1 from the clutches of Anubis (522 – Revelations). Due to their incurable degeneration disease, he dies in the mass suicide of the Asgard explosion of Orilla (1020 – Unending).
